    Women on the Antonine Wall ›

    To  celebrate International Women’s day, the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project and the Garrell Vale Optimists invite you to  an event about the women who lived on and around the Antonine Wall during the Roman occupation.

  • Falkirk Distance Stone Commission ›

    An artist is sought to research, design and produce a sandstone sculpture in the style of the original distance stones found along the line of the Antonine Wall. 

    West Dunbartonshire Council, on behalf of the Antonine Wall Management Plan Partners (and as part of a wider National Lottery Heritage Fund project) wish to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced artist to design and produce a Roman themed stone sculpture for incorporation into a landscaping scheme at Cow Wynd, Falkirk.

  • Guided Tour along the Wall: Bearsden Bathhouse ›

    Ever wondered how the Antonine Wall looked like beyond the Bathhouse on Roman Road? Did you know that excavations in Bearsden showed that Roman soldiers imported figs ? To learn more, join our tour ! Starting point and Parking will be at Bearsden Baptist Church where you will be able to see the Roman Mosaic created by the community.

    The Bearsden Barrista will be open so you will be able to enjoy coffee and cakes in the Chruch after your tour.

  • Guided Tour along the Wall: Croy Hill ›

    Starting at Auchinstarry Marina we will walk up Croy Hill to discover the fort and the Antonine wall. This is an impressive example of the Roman's construction work at the Wall navigates a rugged landscape. The views of the Kelvin Valley are impressive.

    Did you know that the Antonine Wall runs through Callendar Park in Falkirk and that it was cut through to allow better access to the house when Queen Victoria came for a visit? Join our Antonine Wall Volunteer to discover more about the Romans in Callendar Park. The tour will start in front of Callendar House and after a tour inside the Roman room, you will have a look at the wall itself.

    The walk will be easy but will go through grass. Please wear appropriate footwear .

  • Antonine Wall Community Conference 2019 ›

    One year on from the announcement of our successful application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project is hosting our second community conference.  This event will celebrate the engagement and involvement of communities along the Wall, showcase progress over the first year of the project and outline plans for the coming two years.

  • Big Roman day at Kinneil ›

    Kinneil Museum, Kinneil Park, Bo’ness. EH51 0PR

    Date: 14/09/2019, 10:00am to 3:00pm

    Replica Roman leather tents will be on display outside the museum to give an idea of what it was like for a Roman soldier to be on military campaign in Scotland.  Other reproductions include a military flask, pottery and weapons.  This is your chance to handle a gladius – the short stabbing sword used by the legionaries – feel the weight.  Experts will be on hand to put the objects into context and provide additional information.

    Kinneil House will also be open this day – so why not combine the two?

    The Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project will be bringing along replica Roman armour to try along with lots of replicas of objects found along the Wall.  Come along and see what life was like on the Antonine Wall for soldiers on and off duty.  We will also have activities for young and old.

  • Scottish Living History Festival ›

    Rediscovering the Antonine Wall will be attending the Scottish Living History Festival with replica pottery artefacts and replica Roman armour along with craft activities- come and make your own laurel wreath or paint some Roman coins.  This is part of a much wider festival which features re-enactment displays, talks and activities for the whole family including helping to carve a Roman milestone, dig pits and quern stones, make a wattle fence, paint runes and make clay pots.

    To mark the 10th anniversary of the inscription of the Antonine Wall as a World Heritage Site, and to celebrate the ongoing involvement of communities along the Wall, the Antoine Wall Steering Group will be hosting a community conference on Saturday 29th September at the Glenskirlie House and Castle, Banknock, Falkirk. In the morning, a range of both academic and community speakers will discuss projects along the Antonine Wall, its history and archaeology.

  • Day Conference: The Lived Experience of Women in Roman Cumbria and Beyond ›

    This day conference is inspired by the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, which enabled all men and some women over the age of 30 to vote for the first time in the UK. The conference will present and discuss the lives of women at the north-western edge of the Roman Empire.

  • Hadrian's Wall Archaeology Forum ›

    The Hadrian’s Wall Archaeology Forum is an annual day-conference featuring talks for the general public about new discoveries in the northern frontier zone including the Cumbrian coast. The subjects of this year’s talks include the ongoing excavations at Vindolanda, new investigations at Benwell and Piercebridge, the results of geophysical surveys at Netherby, and the discovery of a unique (for Britain) discharge diploma near Lanchester.

  • Exhibition - Roman Frontiers: The Antonine Wall in Falkirk ›

    Callendar House Second Floor Galleries, Falkirk

    Dates: 20/05/2017 to 29/10/2017

    The exhibition will illustrate the ability of the Roman army to adapt physical frontiers to the geographical and topographical setting wherever they occurred in the Empire.  The central feature will be a full scale representation of the linear frontier barrier on the Antonine Wall.  Objects on display will include the famous Roman whistling lead slingshot from Burnswark and a splendid griffin figurine that provided the crest of a Roman cavalry helmet, found at Polmont, will be on display for the first time ever.

  • World Heritage Day 2016 ›

    Come along to the National Museum in Chambers Street, Edinburgh on Monday 18 April, and join in the celebrations for World Heritage Day 2016. You can learn about the six World Heritage Sites across Scotland, ranging from St Kilda (celebrating its 30 year anniversary) to the newest member of the group, The Forth Bridge, inscribed in 2015. There will be oportunities to dress up, to try out a range of craft activities, and to have your photo taken on front of a 'green screen' that can magically transport you to each and every one of the World Heritage Sites.

    Big Roman Week 2015 ›

    FALKIRK district’s annual Roman festival returns this September.

    The seventh Big Roman Week kicks off on Saturday, September 19 and runs until Sunday, September 27.

    Walks, talks, family events, film shows and arts and library activities have all been lined to get local people to explore their “Roman roots” and appreciate local history. Many events are free of charge, but check listings for full information.

    Roman Flashmob ›

    Throughout Kirkintilloch

    Date: 12/09/2015, 2:00pm to 3:30pm

    Visit three mystery locations in the town centre to travel back to a time when Kirkintilloch stood as the north-western frontier of the vast Roman Empire.

    With the help of a friendly Roman ghost, participants will enjoy epic tales, behind-the-scenes experiences and more! As hidden forts are exposed and long forgotten stories are uncovered, the true nature of Kirkintilloch will be revealed. You’ll have to keep your wits about you, as the plan of attack will only be revealed 24 hours before the event!

    A ‘memory gathering’ day, part of the Tamfourhill fun day, will take place at Tamfourhill Community centre on the line of the Antonine Wall. Local residents are encouraged to come and share their stories, experiences and photos of life next to the World Heritage Site. There will be stalls, the café will be open and there will be archaeological activities for children, young people and families, aimed at sparking their interest in local history.
