Mumrills
Concrete flooring fragment, Mumrills
A large piece of Roman concrete made out of crushed tile – a rough form of opus signinum. The underside is made up of the sides of box flue tiles. It would have been the upper layer of a suspended floor for a hypocaust. The hot air below would heat it up and then it would release the heat into the room slowly, like a storage heater. It was found in the 1920's at the commanding officer’s house at Mumrills fort.
