Early Years

Nurseries based close to the Antonine Wall have a wonderful opportunity to introduce themes in Social Studies in a natural way through a site visit.

This can lead to a range of cross-curricular classroom activities which introduce pupils to the idea of the Romans and the past at a very simple level.

A visit to the Antonine Wall with a nursery class could meet the following Early Years outcomes:

Curriculum for Excellence - Social studies: experiences and outcomes

People, past events and societies

"I am aware that different types of evidence can help me to find out about the past." - SOC 0-01a

"I have explored how people lived in the past and have used imaginative play to show how their lives were different from my own and the people around me." - SOC 0-04a

People, place and environment

"I explore and discover the interesting features of my local environment to develop an awareness of the world around me." - SOC 0-07a
